Wallwork Heat Treatment (WHT) at Bury has received full registration to the International Environmental Standard ISO 14001. This applies to all the thermal processing, heat treatment and foundry operations at the three sites in Bury, Greater Manchester.
The new ISO 14001 registration is a significant addition to Wallwork Heat Treatment’s other standards, which include ISO 9001:2000 and BSEN ISO 9100, reflecting WHT’s commitment to the high quality area of manufacturing. Last year Wallwork also joined the select few UK businesses that are accredited to NADCAP, which is the quality approval method required by many international aerospace businesses, including Boeing, Rolls Royce and BAE Systems.
“This is a significant milestone for us,” said WHT director Peter Carpenter. “Over the last decade we have steadily moved to vacuum heat treatment and other high-tech coating and heat treatment processes that both reduce our energy requirements and give us greater control over the processes. The ISO 14001 registration confirms our continuing moves towards cleaner technology in line with customer requirements in the aerospace and automotive industry.”
Wallwork Heat Treatment supplies a variety of metallurgical and thermal process services, including hardening, tempering, annealing, stress relieving, nitriding, and others needed to meet the demands of the aerospace, medical and precision engineering markets.
Wallwork Heat Treatment’s environmental co-ordinator Michael Jarvis commented, “We are delighted to have achieved registration to this world class environmental management system. WHT is committed to managing environmental impacts and promoting sustainable developments as an integral part of our general management process.” He also commented on the hard work required by Wallwork staff to achieve ‘the standards’.
“We find our customers are increasingly interested in Wallwork producing high value added work to stringent engineering and metallurgical standards, as well as showing its environmental qualifications,” said Nick Olpin, WHT’s quality team leader at Bury, who is responsible for maintaining the very high quality standards required to conform to the NADCAP aerospace accreditation.
The ISO 14001 registration was gained through the British Standards Institution (BSI) which is globally recognised as the world’s leading standards and quality services organisation, offering an independent and impartial service to both the public and private sectors. Work is continuing towards ISO 14001 registration at other Wallwork Group sites in Birmingham and Cambridge.
