Wallwork Heat Treatment Group
The Wallwork Heat Treatment Group, which today employs over 200 people at three principal locations, was founded in 1959 by Robert Wallwork. The head office is based at Bury, where there is also a large heat treatment and metallurgical centre. Other members of the group operate from Small Heath, Birmingham, and Swavesey, Cambridge. All units operate 24/7 with complete logistics support and meet recognised ISO quality and process accreditations. Selected sites and processes hold accreditations to BSEN 9100 and Nadcap and are approved by many aerospace manufactures including Rolls-Royce, Airbus and BAE Systems.
Wallwork Heat Treatment Ltd, Bury
The Bury plant operates a full set of heat treatment services, including energy efficient vacuum based processes, and specialises in aerospace treatments. Accredited to Nadcap, and with many prime aerospace manufacturer approvals, this site provides a comprehensive range of metal treatments including carburising, case hardening, nitriding and nitro-carburising. The services extend to TufftridingTM, subzero treatments as well as hardening, tempering, annealing, normalising, stress relieving, austempering and martempering. Capacity is available to process using air, gas atmosphere, salt baths or vacuum according to process requirements. Like other group members Bury provides a comprehensive technical advice service backed by laboratory services and substantial and continuous capacity investment.
Wallwork Cast Alloys
Wallwork Cast Alloys is located at a separate site in Bury; it operates a foundry which supplies high alloy heat resistant castings and precision components for high temperature processes, mainly Nickel and Chromium (Ni/Cr) castings used in the heat treatment industry. Heat resistant castings can be manufactured from patterns, drawings or the in-house design service. WCA was formed in 1986 to supply heat resistant castings for jigs and furnace spares, and is backed by more than 150 years' association between the Wallwork name and the foundry industry. The services can include, recycling [Nickel-Chromium only], in house design & pattern making, rapid response emergency replacement castings, and metallurgical analysis.
Wallwork Heat Treatment (Birmingham) Ltd, Small Heath
A large full service Wallwork facility in Birmingham serves motor sport and the automotive sector with a complete range of heat treatment process services that extend from large, traditional salt bath furnaces to the latest vacuum processing units. In addition to the services offered at the Bury site the Birmingham site has much larger capacity for treatment of large items in salt baths.
Tecvac Ltd, Swavesey, Cambridge
This site specialises in ultra hard coatings. These coatings, which include a variety of Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) and Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) coatings, cover many different metallic-based formulations, as well as Diamond Like Carbons (DLC), and the deposition of pure metallic thin films. Services available at Swavesey include titanium nitride, titanium carbo-nitride, chromium nitride, Nitron® coatings plasma surface modification, plasma nitriding, ion implantation and vacuum brazing. In addition to these surface modification processes there is also an extensive vacuum heat treatment facility on site.
Applications of Tecvac's thin film technology include highly stressed turbine blades, engine bearings operating at speeds of up to 20,000 rpm, and heavily loaded undercarriage bearings for the latest long haul, high capacity airliners. Other aerospace applications include moving surfaces within flying control and trim actuators, and sacrificial thin film surfaces within emergency and main power systems. A controlled environment facility supports Tecvac's processes to achieve very high levels of cleanliness prior to coating required by aerospace and biotechnology applications such as artificial joints and implants.
Tecvac also manufactures specialised vacuum processing plant including PVD coating equipment.
